Video Card Recommendations
I know this has been asked and debated on here a million times. But I am in the process of coming back to Vegas after using Adobe CC products for the last couple of years.
The only issue I seem to have in Vegas is smooth timeline playback. I am not sure if it is maybe my current video card. I am currently using an old GTX470 (1GB). But even with quality set to Preview Half, at times the framerate will drop to like 12fps.
My system specs are:
AMD FX8150 (8 cores)
32 GB RAM
GTX 470
SATA 3 drives for editingI am wondering if I change to a Radeon R7 260X if I will see an improvement on the timeline playback? I don’t have a lot to spend right now, though I may opt for a 270x if it’s that much better. But these cards seem to offer good performance at decent prices. I think I read somewhere that the 260x performs better with Vegas than the GTX470. Maybe I’m wrong?
I know I will take a hit on the rendering, but that’s ok. To be honest, smoother (and higher quality) timeline playback is more important to me. I usually render projects at the end of the day and leave ’em going all night anyway.

I’m planning to build a computor, and like yourself I’m interested primarily in smooth playback. Seems the whole GPU topic and SVP is a bit of a minefield. While I’m no expert by any stretch, from what I can gather looking through various sources on the web, the Radeon GPUs (Open CL?) seem to do a better job of playback?…
Interestingly though, some folks are saying they get great playback with no GPU at all! Check the link in my post for a another CC thread on this topic https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/24/983833. Seems a good motherboard and intel processor are most important…

Thanks for the response, Lars! Your needs are very similar to mine. I too am using a GH4 and also an FZ1000. I was hoping to not have to build a new system, but use my current one for another year or so if possible. But…I am using an AMD CPU, and a slightly cheaper mobo (ASUS M5 A97 R2.0). Hopefully that won’t nider me too much!

For timeline playback GPU acceleration in Vegas Pro the AMD Radeon cards are the way to go. Your NVIDIA won’t help you much there. People have reported good results with the new Radeon R9 series. I’m not sure how much help the R7 series will be since it’s really an entry level card.

Thanks for the response John. Yeah, the more research I am doing, the more I think the 270x might be a better choice.

Yea, I was going to say something but the post was about video cards. It’s pretty well accepted that Intel CPU’s are better for video editing than AMD but changing your CPU architecture is not as easy as changing a video card.

Depends on what you are doing. Keep in mind that Vegas turns resampling on by default. If your footage does not match your project settings, playback will slow to a crawl. For example, if I drop 24fps footage on 23.97fps timeline, my 4930K with R9 280x gets 2 – 3fps!! If I disable resampling or change timeline to 24fps, then playback is full frame rate.
Also consider that when editing, if you make lots of cuts, your HDD will begin to bottleneck your parts.
As for your setup, you actually have a very good motherboard. Not the best, but far from the worst. I don’t know how your 470 compares to a GTX 580, but I get full frame rate playback with that. There is a chance you may have something else going on and while any R9 is a much better card, it may not solve the issue.
What is your budget by the way?
