Video card advice

I know I can playback AVCHD footage and it plays pretty clean with the occasoinal stopage. What I wonder is what will happen when I get a big project going. I do weddings and even though there pretty simple (1 or 2 layers) they can be like 2:30 hours long. I wonder if it will get slower with length.

I had a 1.5 hour project that played fine. If I start to add effects it can bog down. Do you add effects as you edit? I add them at the very end with AVCHD projects.
