    Hi ladies and gents,

    Here’s the set up:

    – just upgraded to Final Cut 5 via HD Studio upgrade
    – our deck with the Firewire in is the JVC SR-VS30U combo deck
    – video source in has been mini DV and DVD

The video is “jerky,” almost looking like there’s an interlace problem, like there are dropped frames, though there’s no error message. The audio is fine.

I’ve gone through the preferences I know to check, and everything looks right to me. I feel like this is going to be one of those “head slapping ‘Duh'” moments, and I’d greatly appreciate any thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Joey

Where is it jerky? During capture? After capture playing back in the Viewer? On an external video monitor? If it’s during playback, is the log and capture window closed? Are the Viewer and Canvas set to Fit to Window?

    All the best,

    Tom

    Hi Tom,

Video is “jerky” after capture, during playback in the viewer and an external monitor. Log and capture are close, viewer and canvas are set to fit the window.

We’re also seeing some motion blurring on video of objects in motion. For example, on a piece of video captured before the upgrade, there’s a shot of bus with feet getting on the bus as the bus door opens. The feet and the swinging doors have some “jaggedness” while the background looks fine.

    Thanks for your response,

    Joey

Are you getting dropped frame warnings?

The jaggedness sounds like you’re seeing interlacing during playback. You shouldn’t see this on your video monitor.

Tough one without seeing… jagged edges is usually an interlacing problem, though. Tom is right.

Maybe check a couple of things if you haven’t already re: jerky playback:
Clip settings – was the footage OK before the upgrade?
Sequence settings – these should match your clips
RT Settings – the wrong RT setting on your machine could cause weird playback
Hard Drive – how full is it? You may get dropped frames if your drive is really fragmented or full, etc. Is it a separate media drive?

And definitely check your stuff on a video monitor, not your computer screen, to look for those jagged lines as Tom suggested.

    Good luck! Hope this helps.
