Problem: cannot capture video from camcorder. I’ve been using my current set up for a couple years with zero issues. Then as of a couple weeks ago I am no longer able to capture video.

Using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0
    Windows 7 (64 bit).

When I connect/disconnect the camera to the pc, Windows gives the customary ping sound. I open Vegas and the capture program ok, but the capture program shows a blue preview window with the message: Please connect a device. Of course, a device is connected but no matter what I try it doesn’t detect it. It’s strange how this just happened out of the blue. I have since tried another camera, as well as a new firewire. The problem persists. I’ve tried other capture programs and none of them recognize a device is connected.

What would cause a perfectly working system to stop working? Any ideas?

The camera shows up on the pc’s device list. Every piece of the set up looks to be in good working condition.

Could it be the software? Sony Vegas doesn’t see the cam, HDV Split doesn’t see the cam. Could it be a driver or codec of some sort? None of the troubleshooting guides I’ve seen have fixed the problem.

We’re getting a lot of this type of issue.

I had this and needed to activate the Legacy Driver for the FireWire port. After I did this I could get Vegas VidCap see my miniDV tape drive. Chances are you have the same issue.

Having said that, just responded that was the result of a bad Camera FireWire out port?!?

Lets see if the easier Legacy driver is the issue first.

I activated the Legacy driver and the issue continues.

I also thought the camera firewire out port might be failing, but the computer recognizes it whenever it’s connected.

It’s not just Vegas that doesn’t recognize when a cam is connected (tried 2 different cams), HDV Split does the same thing.

    This issue makes no sense.

[Richard Sutherland] “This issue makes no sense.”

    Eh? Can’t disagree there . .

Try a different cable? There maybe something intermittent with it.

Having just gone through a similar issue, it seems your camera and cable must be OK since it appears in Printers and Devices. I had a camera with a failed firewire port. If you have access to another firewire ported camera..even a loaner.. try it and see. There just might be some funny goings on in the camera firewire department.

Somehow Windows isn’t allowing other programs to see the device. That might be one to throw at the Microsoft tech-help forum.

I’ve tried a new firewire, as well as a different firewire ported camera. The issue remains.

As I analyze the set up:
-Cameras both recognized by pc so computer and connection are ok.
-New firewire cable so connection is ok.
-Sony Vegas appears stable so software is ok.

I just don’t see where the problem could be.

Phil, thanks for the Windows suggestion. That’s about the only lead I have right now.

I’m off sailing for a couple of weeks, but will be very interested if you find a solution to the problem, so will look up this thread when I return.

    Happy New Year.
