    Hey all,

I need a tad bit-o’ pro help. I am looking to transfer VHS video to DVD, via capturing the video on my rig, de-interlacing it in AE, and doing the final DVD authorizing in Encore. The problem is getting the VHS video into my computer. I have Adobe Premier CS3, have read tutorials and am now totally confused. Do you need a video capture card that is compatible with Premier (I currently have a Hauppauge PVR-150, and it is not), or just software that will record the video from the card?

As for the mode of transfer, I have a DVD/VCR combo, it has the s-cables in back, and is compatible for the 2009 switch over. From what I understand, I can just plug the “out” s-cable on the DVD/VHS combo to the “in” s-cable port on my computer? Is this correct? I have been reading conflicting thoughts that I have to digitize the VHS video first through something like a DV-camcorder, others say you can just plug the VCR into your computer and you’re set.

Basically I am looking for some advice, am I heading in the right direction? What might a be doing wrong (technically speaking)? Any advice on inexpensive video transfer cards that work with Adobe Premier CS3, that won’t kill me financially (I’m putting myself through grad school), and any thing that I might not know.

Thanks-a-billion for any help anyone can give me.

    Best…

First off Google – VHS Video Capture
    There are lots of solutions.

I use a special PCI card which came with my computer.
It saves the video from the VHS tape and then I can go in an edit with Premiere.

Another good solution I noted from Google is that some cameras have a RCA in plugs that allow you to run your VHS tapes to the camera and then capture via Firewire.

You can capture using your TV card but only with the software that came with it. I doubt Premiere can edit the stuff though and even if it could, the resulting quality would be poor. Your card is a toy.
Most DV camcorders can take an analog signal from your VHS player and convert it on the fly to DV, using Premiere’s capture window via firewire.
Then you can edit and export with better results.
If you dont have a DV camcorder, then an A/D converter like ADS Pyro ($150 @ B@H)can do the same job within Premiere.

Mike, Thanks for the advice. I have a question, since you suggested the ADS Pyro. I figured the Hauppage wasn’t going to work so I got a Pinnacle video transfer device. I got the video to transfer, but the video seems fuzzy or “soft”, not as clear and crisp as the original VHS. Is it just the quality of the device? Would the ADS Pyro make a cleaner transfer??

    Thanks again for your help!
