    Dear Friends:

I’m putting together a FCP system. I’m pretty sure of the components I need but I have a few questions about two areas and what equipment might be the best for my uses. I’ll be capturing HDV footage via the firewire pport and will generally output most everything to DVD.

Sometimes I expect to do analog capture from various sources like DVD and VHS and will need to view everything on a monitor so I think I need a capture card that will also give me a good picture on a monitor (I assume I need this since the Power Mac has no direct video output for monitoring).

    1. Video Capture card – which is best? I’m looking at the AJA IOLA for capture and display. Is there a better option? Blackmagic?

    2. Storage – Firevire Drive? Serial ATA? Raid Array? There is a bewildering amount of equipment and I could spend a month evaluating this a reading reviews. SOme gear claims to be certified for use with FCP and some is not. What do most people use? Help me make sense of this.

    Thanks in advance.

Final Cut Pro NEWBIE – Be gentle this is my first time.

    Sincerely

[Richard Martz] “I expect to do analog capture from various sources like DVD and VHS and will need to view everything on a monitor”

What you need is an analog to digital conversion for VHS and for DVD, well; if they are legal to rip, there are other ways to get them back into Quicktime.

For A/D, you realy don’t need a capture card as such, rather you can route the output from a VHS deck into a DV camcorder with component inputs and out the Firewire as digital.

A capture card is for interfacing with a professional tape deck using BetaSP or DigiBeta.

    Dear John:

I also need to display to an SDI monitor or a component video monitor so I really do need a card to do that. Got one in mind?
