i took some graphics to a client today. its a series of screenshots of websites coming up. on the monitor on their avid system the edges of the screenshots ( they are not full frame and there is a blurred background image ) were doing this sort of “vibrate” effect. like pixels dancing around.
almost like the “marching ants” when you select something on photoshop but not quite as orderly. it also shows up where there is heavy edge contrast. any idea what this might be about and how to fix it ? i should also mention that it seemed to occur on sloped lines, so its almost like the opposite of aliasing. instead of smoothing “steps” it makes them jump out.

Well, many of those screenshots supposedly have elements that are very small (only 1 pixel wide lines etc.), so they are never displayed properly with interlaced out put because any given pixel may not appear on both fields. Your only option to improve the situation is to slightly blur everything or re-build/ retouch the websites, taking care to make sure that those offending elements are thick enough.

Of course AE has the Reduce Interlace Flicker filter, which is a subtle vertical blur. So that you can get rid of flicker without giving away horizontal resolution. In PS there’s a video action that does adaptive flicker removal, ie, tries to detect areas prone to flickering and only blurs those pixels!
