Posted by Ben Northenor on May 20, 2009 at 6:28 pmIf I have Final Cut Pro, how would I take some VHS tapes and bring them into Final Cut to make some DVD’s? Thanks in advance.

May 20, 2009 at 6:37 pmHi Ben,
What you need is some simple third-party hardware such as a capture card that allows you to capture footage on the fly from an analog source. Blackmagic Design, Grass Valley (Canopus), and AJA are some of the more popular manufacturers to research against in this area. Hope this helps!

Go to your local Best Buy, COSTCO, whatever electronics store is near you and pick up a DVD Recorder.
Just take the output of your VHS machine and feed it to the Input of your DVD Recorder.
The DVD Recorder acts just like a VHS machine, except it records to DVD.
If you don’t have an electronics store near you, just look one up at any electronics online store. Prices range from $79 to $250 and up. Our Panasonic unit was $99.

May 20, 2009 at 7:55 pmI think that is the best option. Do you recommend a good DVD burner that hooks up to my VCR? I also have a bunch of Hi8 tapes i need to digitize. How should I go about this? thoughts?

May 21, 2009 at 12:21 amIf you have Hi8 tapes, I hope you saved your old Hi8 camera, even if you don’t use it anymore. You can hook your Hi8 camera’s output jacks to your new DVD recorder’s input jacks, the same way you would with your VCR. Otherwise, I think I have seen the existence of a piece of hardware where you can place you’re Hi8 tape inside what looks like a VHS tape(If anyone remembers what this is called please assist) and then put that in your VCR.

May 21, 2009 at 2:48 pmI still have my Hi8 camera, but when I play the tape back. It jumps frames and there are lines on the picture. I took it to get the heads cleaned and it worked for about 15 minutes, then it went back to being messed up. I think I do remember that VHS looking thing you can put Hi8/Mini DV tapes in. If anyone remembers that, please let a brother know.. Thank you!
