VHS plays in color but digitizing in black and white
I am using Final Cut Pro to digitize old VHS tapes. The VHS plays on the TV in color but digitizes in black and white. Other tapes have digitized in color but there are some that are only black and white. What can I do to get them to digitize in color? Why does this occur? Thanks for your help !

Are these commercial tapes or your content? If commercial (such as
movies) the tapes may be encoded with Macrovision, a copy protection scheme that allows display on a TV or Monitor but confuses the recording circuitry. If you are not violating copyright you may need a Time Base Corrector.

Some of the dual VHS/DVD recorders have rudimentary timebase correction. One work flow may be to use one of these machines to dupe from VHS to DVD and then use a DVD ripper to convert to QuickTime.Lee Berger

Thank you for your response. I am digitizing VHS tapes from the late 70s to present for someone that has made television interviews, appearances, etc. Some of these tapes are from the TV studio or recorded personally. I am using a VCR, Canopus ADVC 100, and of course Final Cut Pro. Thanks again for your help!

Perhaps you can take the problematic tapes to a local production facility and get them to run the tape through a TBC and record on DV. Good luck with your project.
