VHS conversion (improving the captured file)
Help the beginner time …
Converting VHS to DV AVI …. used VHS > TBC > ADVC300 > PC
Using VMS for capture.After editting, I would like to try & improve the end result before I create the DVD’s ……… and ideally hope someone will give me a few pointers on what to adjust.
I have tried HSL, Colour Balance etc. … but don’t seem to be able to improve the end result.I I take one such tape as an example … Colours are weak, except that hard reds have significant colour bleed, which I am told is typical and caused by Chromatic weakness within VHS signal.
Also some of the whites seem to alternate between white and a pale blue cast. (look at buildings, which were white)I have put a short DIVX compressed version on:

It shows all 3 problems, would appreciate any help … it’s the process I want to learn, not just to get the clip fixed.
BTW – I didn’t take this, it was by a Professional Video company.

Personally, I would do all of the correcting with the ADVC300 while capturing. I have found that fixing on the way in yields the best results because you will never have better source to correct than the VHS tape itself. The ADVC300 comes with a little application that allows you to tweak lots of parameters.

unfortunately ADVC also has about the worst manual out there 🙂
I have all the settings for basic capture, if I am going to adjust the signal on ADVC using Picture Controller is there a ‘recommended sequence’
If we take Image settings …
Is there a particular sequence that you should set about adjusting Brightness, contrast, Saturation, Hue & Sharpness.
I know you can move the sliders around, but are there any tips or sequences to get this right?The same Q would then apply to the Filter & Video2 Tab
I want to get the best I can during VHS conversion.

I am no expert on using it, I just own one. I usually only tweak the contrast a bit and maybe the brightness and saturation. I agree it’s confusing and not well documented. The general approach is to adjust luminance first and then chrominance. More than that, it’s trial and error for me.
