so i’ve started shooting music videos and there’s this one transition effect that is very basic that I’m trying to pull while I’m editing, but I can’t figure out how to do it or what it’s called.

it’s the type of transition that happens after 0:28 in this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jOJOYcLP3s

where there’s 2 scenes and in a few seconds we see each scene a few times..

basically there’s song where you hear a lot of claps and sometimes there’s about 8 claps in a matter of seconds and I want to ALTERNATE between 2 clips.

What’s the BEST way to do this ?

    I’m editing on FCP7 ?
I could do it by hand but there’s so many claps it would take too much time
isn’t there a preset transition I can buy or something and set it up so it does the job automatic ? like program it to switch every 2 seconds or every second you know ?

That’s old school editing, not a “transition”…. try overlaying two tracks of video and cut the tracks manually. Sometimes there is no easy way.

If you are sure you want a regular interval you could place one clip on V1 the other on V3 and on V2 a clip made from alternating black and white sections (you would have to make this). Then right click on the clip on V3 and choose composite mode travel matte luma.

There is indeed a filter for this, I think it’s “strobe”, but I may have the name wrong, check your video filters for anything like that.
I used to do thsi effect on linear tape editing systems in the 80’s/early 90’s and it took a whole can of Jolt Cola to make one second of this.:-)

Jolt…I remember that stuff…tasted like crap but made you feel like you were on crack.

I still have a few cans and bottles, saving them for some future armageddon need.
