    Hi All

I am editing several interviews in a language which I don’t speak. Therefore, I subtitled all of the interviews before going through the footage, choosing clips, setting keywords, etc… I created compound clips for each subtitled interview (I couldn’t figure out a way to set keywords without creating compound clips that included the subtitles). Now, when I try to bring a selection into a project, it is crazy slow. Actually, in general, everything is crazy slow. Lots of beach balls and I often end up force quitting.

FCPX is using all of my RAM with page outs up to 14GB. If I just open the program and do nothing, it maxes out my RAM and I get about 5GB page outs – having touched nothing.

This is my first foray into FCPX so it is quite possible that I have set up an inefficient workflow…

    My specs:
I’m working on a new MacBook Pro (bought 3 months ago) running Mountain Lion: QudaCore 2.4 GHz IntelCore i7, 8 GB RAM. Working off of proxy media on a 7200 rpm 2TB G-Drive using Firewire 800. I’m running FCPX 10.0.4.

I have to work off of a laptop as I am in rural India for this project and need portability (and have no access to a desktop computer here). Also, for what it’s worth, I can’t hook that laptop up to the internet while I’m here – very limited internet access.

So, my question is: Is there a more efficient workflow for working with subtitles on a machine with 8 GB RAM?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks much in advance,
    Myra

Update to 10.0.5 may help the beach balls. Also avoid creating compound clips inside other compound clips I’ve heard that this can slow the program down,

    All the best,

    How long is the timeline?

Can it be broken up into 20 minute reels?

The bigger the timeline the more Media objects you are asking FCP X to track, hence MORE RAM needed.

The upgrade to 10.05 is also a good idea.

    David
