Very simple newbie question
Posted by David Roth weiss on July 26, 2005 at 5:09 pmIs there a way to put in and out points on a clip in the viewer and put that clip back into a bin with the in and outs attached?
See, that was easy…

July 26, 2005 at 5:48 pmI believe, if I read your question right, you simply double click on the clip in the browser which will load it into the viewer. Once in the viewer find your inpoint and hit “i” on the keyboard to set the inpoint, find your outpoint and hit “o” (or whatever method you choose) to set the outpoint and that’s it. The clip has been changed in the browser – you can now drag the clip to the timeline from the viewer, or load another clip into the viewer – the first clip will return to the browser with the in and out points you selected and you can drop it into the timeline whenever you like.

July 26, 2005 at 6:13 pmThanks for your speedy reply Walter. Told you it was simple…
BTW, as a very long term Discreet Edit user and forum member, and myself a prolific answerer of questions, I am quite humbled to be here now asking such trivial stuff, and I hope never to be a pest.

There’s no such thing as a dumb question. I came over from 6 years of Media 100 and it took me a good three months to get comfortable with FCP and about 6 months to really know it. And that was before I ever found the Cow!
Best advice I can give you is to certainly do all the Tutorials that come with FCP as they really give you a good ‘lay of the land’ on the interface. As you know, all NLE’s are the same, they just put the buttons in a different place. have fun!

I call FCP the ultimate scavenger hunt. And for me, a confirmed PC person (in the past), the hunt is even more difficult. In any case, I am indeed doing the tuts step by step and trying to learn the basic commands and navigation. Its all there somewhere, I just don’t know where “there” is…

As you know, southern boys like me are very well-trained. And, everyone here is so nice and polite and helpful. Its quite spiffy and refreshing here — meanwhile our Discreet Edit forum is getting to be a bit like a mausoleum now. I think we should hold a wake some day soon…
