Last 6 months started using FCP after Avid for many years. But I’m very disappointed in the lack of realtime playback….. or maybe it’s settings I’ve got wrong, or maybe my computer. Playing back from a ProsRes422 timeline I am lucky to have 2 realtime effects (eg titles & a graphic on background shot) to playback smoothly. Very basic effects and transitons I alays have to render before playing back. This is such a pain.Even putting audio onto timeline I have to render before playing. I’m used to on Avid to having up to 7 tracks of video in realtime playing back smoothly in high quality and this is on same Mac Pro computer. I have 5GB Ram, Dual Processor. Would love some help with this because it’s really makes FCP hard to work with.

Forgot to mention that my timeline is set to Unlimited RT and if I change the playback settings to Medium or Low it makes no difference to playback. Working on commercial now and I’m having to render every time I change anything…. aaarrrrhhh!

You have 5gb of ram. Lose a stick. Keep in multiples of four. An odd number like 5GB causes issues with playback.

My dual 2 gig mac pro runs great with 3 gigs.

What hardware were you using with the Avid? What hardware are you using with FCP?

Those statements tell me that your timeline settings do NOT match your footage. If the footage does not match the time line settings then FCP will want to render it to match the settings of the timeline, so when you make a change it has to re render.

I’ll try that and take 1GB out to start with. Thanks

Using exactly same hardware as with Avid. Not sure what hardware you mean but using ATI RAdeo X1900 graphics card, Intensity Pro card, & usual decks.

I think I have same settings for audio & video. I mean I’ve been shooting in HDV and capturing in HDV (until recently with upgrade where I can capture in ProRes). and then have timeline compressor in ProRes 422. That’s the idea in using ProRess isn’t it? So why do I have to render everytime I change something… just to view it in true speed.

Like I already said most likely your timeline settings SO NOT MATCH your video.

Working in a sequence codec that doesn’t match the source is unlikely to provide impressive timeline response as there is a lot of realtime transcoding going on … for some thats unavoidable, for some their Mac’s are sufficiently beefy to make light of the task, but for others then working native is still the best bet. Try setting your sequence settings such that they exactly match your source and see if that imporves things for you.

Bit more info on your hardware setup would be useful too. Is your’s a Quad or Octo core Mac Pro, what kind of storage system are you using and how is it all hooked up?
