Very OT. Regarding 8 core machines
I know this is very OT. I’m just hoping to get responses from people that may actually know the answer not just offering speculation.
I have an 8-Core 3.0 GHz Cloverton Machine (Mac Pro 2,1). I also have an 8-core 2.8 GHz Harpertown Machine (Mac Pro 3,1). I use the 3.0 Machine as my main edit work station and the 2.8 as a secondary system.
When I make then move to Snow Leopard, which is very soon I also plan to upgrade both suites to FCS3. I am also contemplating making the 2.8 machine my main system because although it has a slower processor, it has a faster buss, ram and bigger L2 cache. It is also through a through EFI 64bit. The 3.0 is only EFI 32bit, so it is a future proof thing.
Now here is the question. Is the newer 2.8 Harpertown, although slower processor speed, still faster than than the 3.8 Cloverton? As more and more of the MAc OS world moves to 64bit I want to be ready. And I know an EFI32 bit machine can run 64 bit apps. I’m well first in that. I’m just really asking is the newer 2.8 machine faster than the 3.0?

Why not do a real world test of your two systems. Render something in FCP, Export something from Motion, Color and Compressor. Do the same footage and settings on both systems.

I wanted to know if anyone had any technologic insight to the 2 different xeon processors. I’m leaning to the 2.8 as it is EFI 64Bit so when thing truly go that way I am prepared.

Understand, I’m more interested is how fast a render or export is vs what a paper says :-). I’m pretty sure the 2.8 would be faster than the 3.0.

I agree, I don’t care what the papers say either. Because it takes so long to reinstall everything, I just want to make sure I have the fasted machine for day to day editing and color correction.
The reason I haven’t done a speed comparison is I haven’t installed SL on any of the machines yet, but friends who have inform me it makes the machines scream!

Did you check out benchmark tests at Barefeats? Rob-Art Morgan is usually quite thorough. He’s also open to having people help out with tests on their own systems to help fill out his test results.
