Very choppy videos, need advise regarding graphics card
I’ve started editing movies in Sony Vegas Studio v.9.0, but have trouble editing high quality videos as they get extremely choppy when I manipulate them while in trimmer mode.
My system:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+, 2.51 GHz.
2 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3450I’m running Windows 7, 64 bit.
I expect that the problem lies with my graphics card, the ATI Radeon. If so, can you please tell me if any of the following budget graphics cards will be of improvement?

Vegas does not offload processing to the video card. “Choppy” playback means that your computer cannot process the video fast enough to keep up with the audio. There are several potential causes of this, but the video card is not one of them.
For starters, what format has been used to encode the source video, and where is the source video stored on your computer?

Sony Vegas does not use any part of a video card. It runs purely on cpu and memory. If you’re having problems with choppy beviour then you ned to either turn down the resolution on your preview and/or increase your cpu size/memory.
If you’re doing avchd then you will certainly need much more ram (2 gig is really not enough for a 64 bit system in the first place) and a quad core cpu.

The ones I’ve tried editing are are high definition (1080p) .wmv-files from 200MB-300MB, and MPEG1-files at about 100MB. Both types get equally choppy.
I’ve been saving all videos directly to C:\, as that’s my only option now. I’ve ordered an external hard drive though, and am hoping it will improve things.
Incidentally, the tutorial I’m using advised me to set “Dynamic RAM Preview Max” to 1024 (max), and “maximum number of rendering threads” to 4 (max).

First, 2GB of memory is the bare minimum for running Windows 7 64-bit. It doesn’t leave a lot of memory to do much of anything else. You should consider getting at least 4GB or more to run 64-bit. Also, a DualCore is ancient technology by today’s standards. I would seriously consider getting a QuadCore computer if you plan on working with HD.
Second, WMV is a horrible format to edit because it is highly compressed and puts a terrible load on your CPU. You would be better off transcoding these files into an intermediary format like CineForm that is easier to edit. You may be able to edit with a DualCore using the CineForm codec or you may have to move to editing with DV proxies if you can’t upgrade your CPU.
As others have said, you graphics card makes no difference in Vegas.
