I’m having trouble getting a good import of simple line-graphics from AE. I’ve reduced the problem to its simplest form. I draw a set of black lines on a grey background in AE (different widths, some vertical, some horizontal). I don’t move the lines’ position in this test.

I export these (OMF-2) varying the field sequence settings with different test exports: e.g. field render off, then lower field first.

I import into Xpress DV v 3.5, varying the import settings: non-interlaced; then even field order.

In every case the horizontals look fine and the verticals smear, 1 or 2 pixels on each side. Why should this be? How do I import of the graphic so that the verticals do not smear?

    thanks, Craig Umanoff

You’ll wanna bring it in uncompressed.

thanks, but I’m not sure that’s helpful. Does “uncompressed” mean that I can’t import jpeg images (which, of course, are compressed)?

No it means don’t import graphics at DV25. Import them uncompressed.
you’ll be rendering quicktime movies from AE.

Ok, there are 2 imports here: the first involves importing the graphic into AE, and the second involves importing AE’s output into Avid.

Could you please describe the complete workflow you’re advising that I follow?

But if you’re referring to the AE – Avid “import,” the problem is independent of codec, including “uncompressed.” Meaning: the problem is there no matter which codec I use.

    thanks, c.u.

Of course your monitor is decent and correctly set up, so if you printed out your graphic, video recorded it and imported as footage this effect does not appear …?
