  • Very annoying capture problems

Posted by Josh Evans on May 15, 2008 at 2:59 am

I am capturing footage in SD, every single time i try and capture, it stops after 8 minutes or so and says “Clip Error” and i have to try again with no luck.

Has anyone ever had this problem:?

[EDIT] I should add that the other half of the time it just stops capturing and says something about dropped frames. I never had this problem before…. HELP!

    Mas specifics for favor:

What’s your system setup? In/out hardware?
What’s your source? DV tape? Digibeta?
What kind of drive are you digitizing to?
Versions of everything: OSX, FCP, QT, etc…

Make sure your hard drive is formated as HFS+

I am importing on DV on my SONY HRV-V1E

my FCP and OSX are both latest versions, as well as my QT.

I am using a Lacie 1TB professional 2 disc RAID.

Is your LaCie RAID connected via Firewire? Capturing DV to FIrewire drives can be problematic because all Firewire devices share the same bus and the bus speed defaults to the slowest device. Try capturing to a different (internal) drive and see if that solves the problem.

It’s a better idea to use internal or eSATA drives (but not the system drive) for higher performance.

Go to disk utility, there you will see a list of drives, click on the top level of your lacie and see what it says on the right. If it is an NTFS formatted drive it will not take files larger than 2GB. which is why it would stop at 8mins every time.

You can also format your drive from here (choose Mac OSX extended (journaled)) but note that it will wipe everything that is on the drive.

    Hope that helps!

You’ve probably already tried this, but did you check your capture settings?

Uncheck “Abort Capture on dropped frames” in the General tab of User Preferences.

And if it was the drive thing that the other person suggested, could you post a response about the solution? Just for my own curiosity.

    Good luck

I cant see anything on the right about the drive, but it does say that its format is mac osx extended (journaled)

I remember someone telling me not to have it journaled. Does this slow it down somehow?
