Verticle Plasma Screen
Posted by Dave Tavernier on July 5, 2005 at 8:50 pmAnother question: [I wanted to keep these two posts seperate so as not to get confused:]
I need some technical help. I am about to design a motion graphics animation that will get played back on a NTSC 42″ Verticle Plasma Screen TV from a DVD player. How do I set this up in After Effects? What comp size? What render setings should I use.
TIA

July 5, 2005 at 9:05 pmIf it’s playing back from a dvd then I would go with making an anamorphic 16:9 video. What I do is create a square pixel, 864 x 480 (if you are using dv) or 864 x 486 (if you are d1) comp. then when i render i squeeze it down to 720 x 480 (or 486). You also have to decide which way is up, the left or right side of your screen. That is, when you rotate the plasma to the vertical position are you turning clockwise or counter clockwise? Lastly, i would keep things progressive rather than interlaced, becuase it looks better on a plasma.

July 6, 2005 at 6:15 amNo need to worry about specifics. Just use your standard composition and render settings and flip them by 90(flip it back again by nesting it in a standard comp for rendering). All you would need to know is if the screen is HD or only standard video and if it supports progressive playback (this might save you some headaches when integrating real-world footage). The flipping should be the least of your worries. Most Plasma/ LCD screens I know from doing trade show stuff have lots of options including flipping and rotating the video themselves. Still, it’s always good to ask the guy with the screen…

July 6, 2005 at 4:24 pmYou might also consider doing 2 DVD’s, both anamorphic,
but one flagged as anamorphic and one not. Some screens won’t fill or scale as nicely and more than once
I’ve had anamorphic non-flagged DVD’s that looked better than
the flagged one.(flagged meaning 16:9 setting in mpeg encoder/authoring software)

November 22, 2005 at 9:33 pmWhen working with a 864×486 comp that will eventually be nested in a 720×486 comp and then flipped to a verticle plasma tv position, how do you work with the image in AE before it gets flipped? I hope that is a clear question.
