    Hi Everyone,

    Are visible vertical lines in DV video in the FCP viewer window normal?

    I can’t see the verticle lines from the same footage in my Sony PVM-14L5 monitor that I have connected through an AJA LHe card.

    My monitor is an Apple 30″ cinema display.

    I have read that NTSc video is interlaced video, and that compuer monitors are Progressive, and that NTSC video will not appear properly on a computer monitor.

    Are the visible vertical lines in video on the computer monitor a result of a progressive scan of the video frames as opposed to the interlaced scanning of the video?

    I am planning on blowing up my current documentary either to 35mm film or for digital projection, and I want to minimize any visible lines (vertical or horizontal).

    Hello,

    Has anyone experienced the same visible verticle lines issue on a computer monitor? Is this normal because of the interlaced nature of NTSC, and the noninterlaced nature of a computer monitor?

    no, this doesn’t sound normal

    then its ok… what you are monitoring on the PVM through the AJA card is the ‘true’ image … the one on the computer display is only a ‘preview’

    interlacing artefacts tend to show up more as horizontal lines, not vertical … can you post a screen shot so we could see the specific problem

    unfortunately, I think you’ll find those images are only showing typical DV chroma compression artefacts … not something you can easily avoid when working with DV! You can see too much detail on the fancy 30″ monitor of yours …

    all of those screen shots you posted are over 100%, and the CU’s are 400%
    You can’t blow up DV without seeing compression garbage

    Thank you both for your feedback. I feel better, especially since I cannot see the vertical pixel lines in the NTSC monitor.

    I bought the 30″ cinema monitor a month ago, and I suppose that I was not used to the improved image from my last CRT monitor.

    I have a question, though. How are films, that have been shot in DV, able to be blown up to 35mm film without showing the pixelation? I know that video-to-film houses use special software as part of the conversion process (which “softens” pixelation, I believe).

    I want to also mention that when I play a DVD of a documentary film in full screen view on the 30″ monitor, I don’t see any pixelation at all. Is this because the movie has a different (MPEG4) compression?

    I believe that the film (“The Ballad of Bering Strait”) was also shot in DV, but it was later transferred to film for theatrical release.

    Why does a DVD not show the pixelation when viewed in full screen mode on the monitor?

    Hello,

    Andy and Jim mentioned that the vertical pixelation was a normal artifact of the compressed DV format.

    I wonder if you show an uncompressed BetaSP clip at the same viewer window size, if you can also see vetical pixelation? I wonder this because I was reading that while computer monitors employ square pixels, NTSC video monitors use retangular pixels. Could this cause a distorted look when looking at DV video in a computer monitor?
