Does anyone know how to go about creating blurred vertical bars on a 4:3 SD image; therefore, making it 16:9? In addition, the blurred effect on the bars also mirror the 4:3 picture.

This can be seen often on ESPN HD. When broadcasting a 4:3 they attach these blurred bars creating a 16:9 picture.

    Duplicate the 4:3 image.

Scale it up to around 200%

Blur it using any Blur filter.

Put it behind the original 4:3 image.

Crop off the edges of the 4:3 image to remove the black bars revealing the blurred image underneath.

I’ve been seeing this a lot lately.

I don’t care for it much but it looks better then
a completely stretched image I suppose.

ESPN and NBC is where I saw it first. PBS does not allow this actually, we have to leave the pillarboxes in place for all 4:3 material upconverted to HD.

I wish they would all just do that.
