Vertical Banding in FCP, But Not QT
This problem is occurring only with the footage for this particular edit, and not others, so I assume that it’s related to the footage itself and not FCP.
THE PROBLEM:
Source footage was shot to XDCAM HD422 at 1080p30. I transcoded all footage to ProRes HQ without adjusting frame rates, resolution, or anything. The problem appeared when I imported the transcoded footage into FCP and noticed a “vertical banding”. What is odd is that this banding only appears in FCP, not when the clip is opened in QuickTime. What makes it more odd is that the banding disappears if I check the option to “Show Excess Luma” in the viewer. When I do the same for the canvas it is not removed.
I can’t show the whole frame, but here is a portion so you get the idea. First with banding, then without. It’s most visible in the blacks.

If I export a portion of the video I do not see the banding when opened in QT, but I do see it once again if I re-import back into FCP.
I checked against the source footage and it has the same issue. Not present in QT, but it is in FCP.
While it’s not debilitating, I would like to know the cause. Has anyone else had this issue?
