I have been playing around with, and loving, After effects to do some video stuff for the youth group I attend. For this work I have used the 30 day trial of CS4. I have 2 computers so I have been able to use the trial a couple different times, but now it is about to run out and I am looking into buying it. My question is if I have gotten use to CS4 would buying version 6, because it is alot cheaper, set me back to a point where I can’t do alot of the same stuff as in CS4? I don’t use the cartoon effect, but what other effects would be missing from 6.0 to CS4? Or should I try and find CS4 for cheaper online somewhere, I have seen it for as low as $450 on a couple websites……

For the sake of longevity, it would be best to get CS4 if you can. However, I have been using CS3 ever since CS4 was released and haven’t had any problems. If however, you’re only using AE for titles and simple motion graphics (not compositing), go with CS3.

Dave & Mark make very good points so I’d only add that, whichever version you go with, being that you’re looking for cheap online sales, you might check that you’re buying from a legitimate reseller or risk your software not working properly or at all … and having no recourse with a phony reseller.

Yeah, I want a legitimate copy, and I do want the CC effects as well. I am actually in the process of applying to get back into school for a masters degree, seminary actually, so I will try and find out if I can get the student discount once I get accepted. That way I can get CS4 and stay within my budget. Thanks for all the help.
