The CS4 article I mentioned is below, but it’s not about FCP 7, that was said in jest. The first installment in the series is really just a first glimpse of CS4, but I will be comparing and contrasting CS4 and FCP in future installments, plus I’ll be working in a 64-bit environment under Vista-64, giving everyone who reads a taste of what the future of editing holds for us in that regard.

October 2, 2008 at 10:05 pmI love rumors like this. FCP is growing it’s market share. It is a successful product and a good package. CS3 wasn’t anywhere near as good as FCP Studio 2. I do not know about CS4, but FCP Studio 2 has some more tried and tested tools so I doubt a relatively new package is going to be superior.
Also, Apple just purchased Color.
So the logic (presuming Apple has not forgotten how a business works) would be that if you have a successful product that you are still expanding, you would not suddenly ditch it through fear of an unproven product.
So why are people making such nonsensical rumors??
Here’s one, Apple is about to re-release “The Lisa” with an iSight being the only new improvement…

Actually that’s going on 18 months or so now. No major updates during that time other than to fix a few bugs. It’s definitely languishing and could be much more solid, especially with more codec support from / to FCP.
NAB in April will be very telling as to whether Apple intends to keep that app running as a stand-alone or simply take what they need and create a new CC tool for FCP. If there are no major updates to Color at that time, I think the writing will be on the wall for Color as a stand-alone app.

October 3, 2008 at 5:52 pmWalter, it sounds as though Color is not doing well independently? I thought that it was a really terrific program, though I have to admit I still send out projects to get their final mix and color correction at post houses with dedicated tools for that. (More because I can’t purchase the quality external hardware to do so than because of a lack of interest). Wait, did I just answer my own question……

October 3, 2008 at 7:03 pmColor is a great tool, unfortunately, it is still on version 1, and has not been updated significantly since being rolled into FCS2 over a year ago. One main issue that has prevented us from using it, is that there is a problem going back and forth from FCP. Once you CC a sequence in Color and send it back to FCP, sending it back to Color for adjustments has issues.

PS I was going to spell it phonetically, but wasn’t sure if people would get it. Thanks though!

Well, based on my own unscientific observations, people don’t want to spend the money necessary to truly support Color with the proper software / hardware so it doesn’t seem like it’s the “killer app” Apple thought it would be. Silicon Color required an investment of $5,000 to $25,000 just to purchase the software so it was in a very high end market. Rolling it into the Studio suite definitely put it “into the hands of the masses” but not all that many of the “masses” seem interested in something that:
1 requires a new workflow
2 requires an investment in accurate monitoring hardware
3 does not support al the codecs in FCP
4 requires more than one or two clicks.
The shame of it is that there is simply nothing, and I mean NOTHING like this out there for the Mac anywhere. It’s an incredible color grading application and I got back my $5,000 investment in Final Touch HD very quickly. But I don’t think the Final Cut Pro market is ready to support something like this “en masse.”
If they did, well, FCP would absolutely kill the competition because once you learn to use Color, you’ll never use anything else.

Uh, no. It’s Version 3. Final Touch was around for almost 3 years before Apple purchased it. It was just going into Beta Version 3 when Apple re-christened it Color. It’s a four year old app now (at least.)

You never send a sequence back to Color a second time, that’s an incorrect way to use the tool. You simply adjust the shots you need to adjust in Color or if you change some shots, you just send those shots back into Color.

October 4, 2008 at 7:00 pmSo my question is, assuming everything you’ve said is what’s going on, why not re-introduce it as a standalone app that’s not in FCS, and either lower the price of the FCS or expand the existing apps in the suite to compensate for the cost?
