    Hello all,

I know the NTSC to PAL conversion topic has been covered at length here, but I wanted to verify that I have the correct workflow if I’m going from NTSC Beta SP footage to PAL format delivered on DVCPro tapes for Australian tv.

The plan is to capture the footage as 8-bit uncompressed NTSC into FCP. Then from there, throw the quicktimes into compressor and convert to 8-bit uncompressed PAL using the conversion preset in compressor. Finally, the resulting quicktimes will be put on a PAL timeline in FCP and layed to the DVCPro tape with our Panasonic AJ HD 1400 DVCPro deck (which has a PAL setting).

Does that sound correct to those who’ve done this kind of thing before? Is there a more efficient/smarter/better way to do this?

    Thanks in advance…

    Dan

How much footage do you have? A hardware standard converter is the best and quickest way, if you have a lot it maybe worth renting. If it is just a tape it might be worth sending off to have converted.

If you do it yourself make sure you are monitoring the PAL video. This is the only way you can judge the quality of the conversion.

If the program has been shot NTSC and it is only the final deliverable in PAL, then edit NTSC, output to tape and have the final tape professionally standards converted using hardware.

    Dan,
Michael’s suggestion is sensible, and if you use Compressor for your conversion, you should tweek the preset in the frame controls tab. Search this forum for more on this Optical Flow technology.

    Cheers
