  • Vegas won’t open project files after recovery

Hello everyone. I have a quite unusual problem with MAGIX Vegas Pro, at least as Google says so. Long story short: I’ve upgraded my PC and formatted my hard drive. I thought I backed everything up, but forgot my .veg projects. I’ve managed to recover them with a utility, including even .bak files, restored them to another direction, but they won’t open – Vegas says “the file is an unsupported format”, or even crashes with following description:
    Application Name: VEGAS Pro
Application Version: Version 15.0 (Build 177)
    Problem: Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
    Fault Module: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 15.0\vegas150.exe
    Fault Address: 0x0000000000000000
    Fault Offset: 0x0000000000000000
Obviously, these project files are corrupted. Is there any way I can fix them? Is it even possible? I tried to rename .bak files to .veg, but the problem remains the same. I’ll be extremely grateful for any help.

    Hi Dmitry,

Sounds like maybe the utility you used to recover the veg file didn’t get it completely restored and therefore Vegas thinks it is corrupt. You might want to try a different recovery program or different settings.

Thanks for the clarification, George. Can you by chance recommend me a useful software that can 100% guarantee recovery of my lost files? Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi Dmitry,

I doubt there is any utility that will provide 100% guarantee to recover files, especially a .veg file. I have no recommendation other than do a search and read the reviews and try something different from the utility that has failed. Wish I could over more, good luck with it. If you find a solution, I hope you will post it here, so it may help others in the future.

    Best Regards……George

You seem to be using a very early build of Vegas Pro 15. VP 15 had eight updates/new builds with bug fixes after that. Try updating to the last build from here https://www.magix.com/us/support/my-service-center/product-downloads/

Thanks Jorma, but I don’t really believe my trouble to be in Vegas build. I tried to recover a lost image as an experiment, but only got a corrupt file. I’m afraid George is right, my .veg files just wasn’t recovered right. I used Hetman Partition Recovery. Yesterday I tried MiniTool Data Recovery, and successfully recovered some of the projects, but only some. Unfortunately, I need to recover them all, or at least the latest ones I was working on. I’ll keep searching for a solution…

So far, I’ve managed to recover few more project files. Almost all of .veg files were saved, but sadly some of them are lost beyond any recovery. I tried as many utilities I could use, but the result is so. The most helpful were R-Studio and MiniTool Power Data Recovery. So, the lesson is – back. everything. up. If I’ll come to yet another result (I’m still not giving up), I’ll post it here.
