Is it just me or the Premiere UI a total trainwreck? I have long considered Vegas to be a masterpiece of usability and efficiency, particularly in the core functionality of editing on the timeline. Everything is easy, fast, logical, flexible, clear, and a joy to work with. Vegas is like cruising around a tropical lagoon in a zodiac. Premiere is like squeezing blood from a turnip locked in a straightjacket while solving a rubik’s cube.

I’ve had 20 years of software use from Photoshop 1 to Softimage on Irix, and other than Blender (3d) this has to be one of the worst UI’s I’ve ever seen, especially in the most essential area, basic editing. Everything that should be easy, and that is easy in Vegas, seems to be unnecessarily complicated, poorly designed, and inordinately difficult or impossible in Premiere – i.e. working with untrimmed clips and moving them on top of each other without changing them, creating dissolves that stay on the clips as you move them on the timeline, etc. Is it just me? What do other people with more experience with both programs think? Is it possible to make Premiere as usable as Vegas. I only ask because for financial reasons (long story, not interesting) it’s easier for me to go with Premiere, though I’m used to Vegas.

I think one of Sony’s strong points is a well organized UI. Vegas is a good example. Their entire line of hardware is also easier to use.

I bought a Panasonic combo VHS / DVD Burner to make DVDs of my old family camcorder tapes. Every time I went to use it I had to read the manual. The UI made no sense and was very confusing. I finally got so frustrated that I gave it to a friend and bought a Sony. With the Sony I read the manual once and never had to read it again.

I wholeheartedly agree, I feel like I am locked in a purgatory as everybody is abandoning Vegas including its developers and I simply HATE Premiere’s interface. One exception though. The copying of effects between clips… I feel like that was a major failure for Sonic Foundry. But you would think Sony could have fixed it in … 14 friggin years?!?!
