I have a question about working with SD 30p footage in Vegas. I’m shooting in standard def on MiniDV with my Sony HVR-Z7U set to 30p figuring this should look better than shooting at 60i. I have my Vegas project set up for 30p and render the final out to an MPEG-2 using 30p settings. Then I burn in Architect. When viewing the final DVD, the resulting picture quality seems much nicer than at 60i, but I see a kind of stuttering effect whenever there is any kind of motion.

The footage looks great in the project, but once it hits DVD, the stuttering motion is pretty noticeable. Can I get some advice on what the best workflow would be? Should I just go back to shooting in regular 60i until I’m ready to start shooting in HD and delivering on blu-ray? Or is 30p the way to go for the best-looking standard-def picture and I’m just missing something in my workflow?

I believe DVD only supports interlaced video for MPEG2, so the standard DVD formats are 720×480 60i (strictly 29.97 fps) or 720×576 50i. Any progressive footage must be encoded into these using pulldown.

Can you actually shoot SD 30p on that camera? It looks like it can do HDV at 60i/30p/24p or SD at 60i only.

You may as well shoot in 60i, edit with project setting set to match the source, and encode using the appropriate Mainconcept MPEG2 DVD-Architect NTSC preset. If your footage genuinely looks better at 30p, then try 30p for shooting/editing but encode to the same preset as above. You can also try editing/encoding as 60i.

Also try the DVD on different players/TVs to see if the stuttering is still noticeable.

As Matt said, DVD does not support 30p. If you want progressive output you have to convert it to 24p. Otherwise render 60i from Vegas using one of the “DVD Architect …” templates and it should look fine.
