Vegas renders HUGE files.
Hello,
Why is it that when Vegas renders a project, (I render it to .avi format) that the final file size is ENORMOUS? My 32 minute project turned out to 233GB in size. And how come it won’t play seamlessly until after I compress it (I use VirtualDub for compression). Even a small project (about 7 minutes in length) would amount to a file size of about 40GB. And it won’t play until I compress it.
Is there a way to render it once, and have a decent file size? Or is this what everybody does when it comes to rendering?

It sounds like you might be using the Default setting which is uncompressed. Never use the default setting. Always pick the template that is closet to the format you want to deliver in. If you let us know the format you’re delivering (DVD, Blu-ray, YouTube, etc.) we can tell you what settings to use.

Yea, the HD 1080-60i YUV template creates extremely huge files because it is meant for people who are capturing through SDI cards or need lossless high quality for doing post work in other applications.

Can you recommend me the render settings? I just want to simply convert to an .avi format which I can later upload to YouTube if I like.

Unfortunately, Vegas Pro no longer ships with an HD AVI format that is not huge in size. They use to ship Cineform but now you have to buy that as a separate program for $99 USD.
I would render to Sony MXF or MPEG2 HDV M2T files. Both will be more than enough quality to make YouTube videos from later. Or just render a YouTube version to Sony AVC now.

I wonder why they stopped with 8, giving you Cineform? I used that all the time. It changed the color with HDV from 4.2.0.to 4.2.2, which is better to chromakey with. That’s why I bought the Blackmagic Shuttle. If I’m capturing in my studio, I don’t use tape. I capture straight from the imager without it going through the cameras HDV compression and capture as Motion JPEG. This format keys fantastic, and has none of the mpeg compression artifacts you can get with HDV and moving your camera in a fast pan. Danny Hays

I’m sorry John, but I don’t see the options to render to Sony MXF or MPEG2 HDV M2T files. Is this not included with Vegas Pro 9?
And what did you mean when you said “Or just render a YouTube version to Sony AVC now”

I assume you found the Sony MXF format as a render type and also MPEG2. The YouTube templates under the Sony AVC type all start with “Internet…” in the template name.

I’m beginning to think if my .avi file that took 8 hours to render and compressing it to a final 6GB file size could’ve been faster to render and smaller in file size if I had rendered it to Sony AVC or MPEG…
