  • Vegas rendering — not enough memory?

I tried searching for anyone who’s had this error before, to no avail.

I have a feature length project that I’m rendering out, shot on HDV, and color corrected with Magic Bullet Looks. Every time I try to render, it seems to crash at a different spot, claiming there’s not enough memory and if I close programs the problem might go away. It’s always right before a transition. They’re not complicated transitions (wipes and pushes and dissolves), but the ones that it always freezes before also have a fake “motion blur” I keyframed right before them, so I’m betting that’s the issue. However, sometimes it gets through a lot of the film before it freezes, sometimes it just gets through a little bit.

When I render, I’ve not only closed every program, but also nixed every background process I feel comfortable getting rid of (including my virus scanner and firewall). I also set Vegas’ priority to “Realtime.”

    My system specs are:
Athlon 3400+ 3.4 ghz (single core)
    2 gb ram
    Radeon x700
    Plenty of disc space.

    Any ideas?

A work around would be to output it to some flavor of avi that you are okay with using. This way it will allow you to place that portion back on the timeline and continue rendering where you left off. Just render out looped sections.

With you only having 2 gigs of ram and using magicbullets that could be your issue. Do you happen to have any image files on the timeline? Jpeg perhaps? If so, convert them to png and size them down to a little over your project settings. This could help tremendously.

    Aaron,
You didn’t mention what codec you’re using to render. See my comments around this board about my experiences with Sony AVC vs. Main Concept. Main Concept solved all of my problems.

I don’t have any big JPGs as far as I know, but I’m currently rendering in chunks, which seems to be working. Didn’t want to do that, but I suppose it’s not a bad idea. Since the render is a full day if I do the whole thing, if something’s wrong at any point with the movie I only have to re-render a small piece. Thanks mate!

I think I was using MainConcept, but I’ll give it another look when this current render (to AVI) is done.

    Thanks!
