  • Vegas recording very low audio level

It’s not my hardware. I have a recording made with CamStudio and it sounds fine (if a bit hissy). But while I may need to bring that sound down, the recording done with Vegas is just way too low. I just want to add some comments to my video, but it’s too quiet.

I removed all of the audio FX and that doesn’t seem to make any difference. Even using the normalization feature, it’s still just too low. I want the recording to be good and as sensitive as with CamStudio in the first place.

Please tell me there’s something I can do in Vegas. It’s hard to believe that this fancy $100 program with all of it’s filters and what not is of worthlessly bad quality.

What kind of mic are you using and how are you recording it?
Did you have a good level before you started recording your voice in Vegas?
Make sure the meter is hitting at least -10 and is set to mono, not stereo.
If you’re using the internal sound card, did you set the mic level on it to maximum?

Thanks a lot for replying. Sorry I couldn’t respond sooner.

I have a Logitech headset plugged into my laptop. My voice goes to about the 12 or larger on the little track meter.
Ok, now I see. If I set the audio level in that control panel higher this goes higher too. Thanks, that really helps. Thou How do I change that?

Mono not stereo? I do have it on stereo. So, I can change that to left or right. I’ll try to see if mono is an option somewhere.

So, I can turn up the audio levels when using Vegas and turn it back down for other applications (kind of a pain, oh well). But it also still does not sound the same. The Vegas recording still sounds deeper, maybe even a bit muffled by comparison. Do you have any idea why they don’t just sound exactly the same? I guess there is a different codec doing the recording, yes?

Different mics as well as different record apps will require different level settings.
Keep in mind that you can also increase the record volume in Vegas by moving the Vegas volume slider to the right.

It may not be an option for you.
If not, don’t worry about it.
It is on my computers at work but not at home and I suspect this is because I have M-Audio 410 firewire audio cards on the work computers.

I’ve used Vegas to record a wide variety of voices using a number of different mics and never had a problem.
I’ve never used a Logitech headset mic though so I can’t comment on it’s quality.
I’ve never used CamStudio either so I don’t know if it’s doing something to the audio that I’m not aware of.

Yes, I have used that. My plan was to record a little loud and then turn it down to meet any other audio that was quieter, but then my recording in Vegas was so low it was really a problem. But turning up the levels helped. I guess I just need to play around a bit more and see if I can improve it further. I have also noticed that microphone positioning can cause a bit of a problem if it’s not exactly the same between recordings. I guess it’s good enough for now for the use case.
