  • Vegas Pro v17 preview framerate worse than v16

Posted by Jim Greene on October 1, 2019 at 10:18 pm

I’ve owned Vegas Pro starting with the old Sonic Foundry days, and with version 16 the framerate playback of the preview for a 5 camera multicam edit worked almost perfectly. It had very little lag, almost always at full 23.976 framerate. And this was with full-frame in the external monitor and set at “Best (full)”. When I run the exact same project using Vegas Pro v17 it previews at 5-10 fps. I’ve tried changing many different settings, inluding the ram set to 0.

I would have expected the playback to be either the same or even better in v17. It does seem to keep up the framerate if I don’t use the full-frame in external monitor, but this is not ideal – it is helpful to see the current take displayed in full, not to just have the 5 camera boxes in the external monitor. Anyone else experiencing this degradation? Is there a setting to fix it? I’d even be happy to replace the graphics card.

My current GPU is the AMD Radeon RX 580, which in v16 seemed to work better than my previous NVIDIA card. Thanks for any thoughts.

Sorry, no settings to fix for that. Therefore its a Graphics hardware update needed as you
mentioned. CPU Processing power upgrade is also very important and one most users
often overlook when wanting more out of Vegas.

I understand that, and also using an SSD helps tremendously (I use one). But my question is why would v17 be worse given the exact same project on the same system? I’m happy with the performance of v16 but would like to use v17. If I knew what graphics card to “upgrade” to I would. Upgrading CPU might not be possible with my motherboard.

Under the File I/O tab in preferences, there is an option to choose the hardware decoder, it is set to “Intel QSV” by default in Vegas Pro 17, changing that fixed the problem for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was already set to the NVIDEA NVDEC setting and neither one fixes the playback lag. Maybe I’ll switch back to NVIDIA.
