Vegas Pro crashing when importing Mp4 (not the usual problem about this)
Hello guys, my first post here, and it’s because Vegas Pro gave me problems for the very first time. I am having a couple of terrible weeks with Vegas Pro 15 and even though I did exchange several email with support, I don’t seem to find a fix (they neither).
I use Vegas Pro (first the 14, then 15) since a couple of years to make gameplay trailers and cutscene animations (I develop games).
Approximately 3 weeks ago, all of a sudden it stopped working (Windows 10 machine) as soon as I either import an Mp4 file or I try to open a project that has Mp4 files imported. It just closes down without any crash window notification or anything.
I did try everything since then:
* I did try a fresh install twice, the second time after having first removed all the folders I could find that seemed to be related (after the uninstall Vegas leaves quite a lot of trash and stuff in the hard disk), cleaning the registry keys.
* I did try to install Vegas Pro 16 trial version, but it crashes as soon as I just open it.
* I did try to Install Vegas Pro 17 and it has the same problem as my 15 (i.e. as soon as I try to import and Mp4 or open a project that has Mp4, it crashes)I tried working with those same Mp4 files with Camtasia (i can’t use it for the final version though as it doesn’t support 60 fps) and they worked absolutely fine. The same files open without a problem both in VLC and inside Unity (that has me think it should not be a codec problem).
I tried importing png images or MXF videos and they work perfectly. I tried to have a friend producing multiple version of those Mp4 from different sources (OBS, Vegas Pro, camtasia, etC) and they always crash.
I tried both switching the GPU used (from integrated to the NVIDIA one and bakc) and to deactive GPU in Vegas completely, but no changes.When I do drag them on the project, they show a “forbidden” sign instead of the usual “+”, and Vegas crashes even before I release the mouse click. When I do use the menu to import, it crashes as soon as I click on an Mp4 file, without even clicking Open.
The problem began from one week to another basically, after I did my first hevc-encoded rendering in Vegas 15, but I don’t think that matter. My computer, beside any usual secret Windows 10 update it might have run, didn’t change anything in the setup. After the issue started, I tried updating the drivers, the codecs, etc, but with no success. I did also try to remove the Windows update that happened in those days, but i see no difference.
I tried almost every solution I found online for similar cases, but no luck at all.
Did any of you ever experience the same issue and/or did ou find a solution for that as I start to be quite desperate? (unfortunately I am in a stage of production in which I can’t do a format of the computer)

Can you post a Mediainfo of your file ?

MP4 is only a container. What’s inside will vary depending on the source that created it.

the thing is, i had those same files tested on another computer of a friend with Vegas pro and they had no problem, and until one week ago I was using them without problem either. Plus, they do come from 3 different sources: OBS, Vegas PRo and Camtasia, I would probably rule out a problem of the files themselves.

Still, it would be nice to see that Mediainfo just so we can cover all the bases and have as much details as possible. If you could, include your computer specs (as detailed as possible) and what software is on the drive.
I’m asking because sometimes the root of the problem may be something innocuous.

Do the files open in VLC player?

I just made it home, gonna give it a try tomorrow morning and post it, I guess it makes sense indeed to dig into small things given how strange is this problem!

Yes, I tried VLC, Unity and Camtasia, and I tried 2 of those files on some friends’ machines with Vegas 14 and 15 and they had no apparent issue

I assume you use WIndows
Close all instances of vegas, Hold Ctrl and Shift, then click Vegas icon to launch it and wait till and open to reset settings appears. Agree and check if it helped.
If not, you would also need to clean out all codes that you have installed, reboot and install the codecs again.
