Everybody has been telling me I must have a hardware problem. We’ve gone over the system and wiped the RAID clean, removed the internal RAID and it’s control card. We now have a single RAID controller (RocketRAID RR2314) that can control up to 4 RAID boxes. I have one which I have captured all new footage on. My system is still WIN 7 64-bit, 16GB RAM, 4 internal drives and 1 external RAID, dual Xeon 2.3GHz, 8 core, Supermirco MOBO X7DWA-N and NVIDIA GeForce 8000GT card.

With all new footage captured from HDV tape, as I start to add clips to the time line I go so far and then Vegas crashes. No editing. Just placing clips on the time line. We’ve put in many hours trying to figure out what hardware might be causing 9.0e to not work.

If you really are editing crash-free in WIN 7 64-bit with 9.0e, tell me your setup. Because after 3 techs have reviewed my computer and can’t seem to find anything wrong, I’ve either got bad copy of 9.0e or it is a very picky version and not stable on all systems with the right hardware.

In the meantime, I will remove 9.0e and install 9.0c and see if there is a difference. 9.0c did work in XP 32bit without this crashing. I’ve only seen this crashing in WIN 7 64-bit.

I have Premiere CS4 and that would be my next test. I don’t want to switch to Premiere, but if it doesn’t crash… which software would you go with?

Hope somebody has some more answers.

OK, where does one find and download 9.0c? It’s not on Sony’s site!

Well, same thing happens in 9.0c. And on the same clip. How can one clip be bad and the next one be OK? Starting to sound like Vegas Pro 9.x has a capture bug.

Still waiting for some more possible answers.

BTW, these same clips that are crashing in Vegas are working fine in my other NLE (SpeedEDIT). Hope this helps somebody.

And why does Sony turn their backs on their customers. They take your money and offer no support what so ever. They have never responded to any of my requests.

    Ken

Sony Vegas customer service is fantastic!

If you subscribe to Sony’s service plan they will answer ALL inquiries, even by phone.

Good luck on getting your system straightened out

I have been editing with Vegas since version 3 and since Sony bought the company the software has steadily gone down hill.
I get more features with each new release but I get a lot more bugs with each release. I have 3 systems with Sony Vegas pro 9.0e on them and they all crash consistanty. The only way to get through an entire edit is to have multiple versions on your computer. I have versions of 8 and 9 64 and 32 bit just to make it through. I wish Sony could make what we have work before adding more features. I now work with Vegas along with cs5, ediius, pro producer, and others. Each program has it’s strengths. I use to be able to get it all done in Vegas, but those days seem a long time ago. I always expect some bugs in a new program, but Sony has taken this to a new level…just look at version 9 at an e release now over a year later and it’s far from fixed. Who can wait that long to fix a product? I hope Vegas doesn’t end up like Sonys sacd format…a great product, but sonys greed has killed it.

Well that’s true, but I could end up paying Sony another $150 and they still may not help. If they “think” it’s a hardware problem, they may just say “we can’t help… thanks for the money though”. I need some kind of guarantee.

Jay, I’d like to talk to you more about your experience with Vegas and CS5. When I get time, I’ll post back here.

Ken, I understand your frustration, and also understand that you are working under a time clock.

Are you sure about your Rocket Raid controller? I know that not all RAID controllers are the same. (It is just a question.)

Also, this should be just a single issue for Sony’s paid support, so you should be able to get your answer for the single issue price, if you choose to go that route.

Have you tried the normal support query, https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/support/technicalsupport.asp

Yeah, Norman, I’ve sent a couple of “questions/requests” to Sony. No reply.

As far as hardware issues, I’m not sure of anything any more. Tomorrow I’ll remove the other RAID card and see if that makes any difference. But here’s the thing, I’ve re-captured a series of clips from the same project with the crashing problem, and I start adding clips to the time line and on clip 008 Vegas crashes. Every time. Same clip. Same type of thing from another series of clips.

So I take this clip that 100% well crash Vegas, put it into my SpeedEDIT time line and if plays fine. No problem. I take the same clip again and put into Premiere CS4’s time line. Plays fine there as well. No crash. In Vegas it will crash Vegas.

Let’s chew on that for a little while and see what people have to say.

Many times on different programs i have had one clip that will not work. I have to open it in another program and render it out then add it back in. I have been using Vegas 9 with an i7 and gigabyte board, windows 7 64 bit and no problems ever. the bad clips i used to encounter were in premier. Also if they are HDV clips, I changed my ram buffer to 100% in capture properties when i am capturing.
