Vegas Pro 9 Rendering settings
Posted by Mark Nacovitch on August 8, 2010 at 2:02 pmI have a Sony HDR FX-7 that I use to film football games. I have to film at DV settings. In Sony Vegas Pro, the project media lists Video 720x480x24 29,97 fps Alpha=none Field order=lower field first. It seems as I watch the video being captured (through my viewfinder), the video looks better than I can get it onto a DVD.I am confused. Some recommend WMV files, some say MPEG-2.I need some input, as most of the online help seems to be settings for youtube. Thank you so much,
Mark

August 8, 2010 at 5:55 pmYou MUST render to MPEG 2 to play the content on a DVD.
Render settings should match the media in this case.
Render to NTSC DVD Widescreen 720 x 480 at a bitrate between 6.5 and 8.5Mbps.
You’ll need to render audio separately as an AC3 file or PCM file.
There is a free tool from VASST that does this for you, called DVD Prep.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Yea, YouTube and DVD are very different settings.
For DVD use the video render type Main Concept MPEG-2 with the video template DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream to render just the video.
Then use the audio render type Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro with the audio template Stereo DVD and render your audio using the same filename (just with the .ac3 extension)
Or you can download the free DVD Prep plug-in from VASST Freeware and it will render both for you in one step.
In DVD Architect set your project to:
Disc format: DVD
Project video format: MPEG-2 720×480-60i, 16:9 (NTSC)
Project audio format: AC-3 StereoThen select a DVD template, drop your rendered video on the menu, ad some titles and burn your DVD.

August 8, 2010 at 6:33 pmThank you very much. My other question is….using the same camera, there are some times I can record in HD. The settings in project media for that are as follows-1440x1080x12 29.97fps alpha=none field order=upper field first. Am also interested in burning these into DVD’s.
Thanks again, Mark

The answer remains the same. A DVD is a DVD. You always render to the same format regardless of what the source media is to make a DVD.

You are not doing anything wrong. DVD MPEG2 files have the extension of .mpg.

August 9, 2010 at 9:30 pmI had trouble getting DVD architect to recognize the .mpg but it seems to be working fine now.
Thanks
