VEGAS PRO 9 DILEMMA – media stream properties could not be applied…
Hello All,
I’ve never signed upto a forum for help before but after cruising on here for other issues and seeing how lovely and helpful people were, I thought I’d give it a go.Absolute disaster stuck today. I have spent about 6-8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week for the last 4 months creating a set of 18 promotional videos for a charity and, perhaps rather foolishly, only had them saved as projects as was waiting for a logo design to arrive. All of them were finished, took buckets of blood,sweat and tears and just needed the logo to go in before being published.
I opened one of them today after a two day break to discover that every single one of them won’t open due to a ‘The reason for the error could not be determined’ dialogue box. When clicking the ‘details’ button I see it says for each clip:
Media file D:\etc.mp4 has changed enough that the media stream properties from the project file could not be applied. Default media stream properties were used.
I have not moved any of the files and have not installed any software apart from a few Adobe After Effects plug-ins. I though maybe these could have conflicted as some are used by Vegas but only installed the After Effects version and they were all installed in the After Effects folder. Consequently, I have since un-installed them all, but to no avail.
I also used IObit’s Advanced SystemCare to do a general cleanup but was very careful what was checked. None were Vegas related.
I have tried a Windows 7 System Restore and have obviously tried re-applying each of the clips but still get the error. I’m fairly PC geeky but am quite new to Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 so it may just be me being dump. However, as it was all for a charity, right now I just feel like walking out in-front of a bus- so any help or pointers whatsoever would be massively appreciated.
I apologise for the length of this dilemma but would like to thank you very much indeed in advance if you are able to spare a minute to help in any way.

I hate those “System Care” programs because they go through the registry deleting things they think are not being used in an effort to clean up but in reality they have no clue what they are doing and could be removing valuable entries.
A system restore back to a day when you knew it worked should have fixed things. I would start by re-installing Vegas Movie Studio. That will at least eliminate anything that might be missing from the registry as a result of the system care running.
Then try dropping one of your MP4 files into a new project and see if Movie Studio can accept it. If it gives you the same message, then it’s not unique to your project files and you need to find out why this format can no longer be edited.
Another thing you could do is convert the MP4 files to an AVI format with a tool like Avidemux 2.5. I like to use MJPEG with PCM audio but I use Vegas Pro. I’m not sure Movie Studio has an MJPEG decoder. You might want to try a small file and see. If this is SD video you could simply convert to DV AVI. Then rename the MP4 files that you converted (e.g., add an underscore to the name) and when you open your project, Vegas will prompt you for the missing files and you can tell it to use the AVI files instead.
Try a few of these and let us know how you make out… and above all… stay away from any buses. 😉

John ‘o boy- you cracked it…! It seems when I rather foolishly installed the K-Lite codec pack, replacing my Shark007 set, it must have done something to the system. Also SVMSP 9 doesn’t seem to like MP4’s as much as Avi’s so I batch converted them all using Prism and re-linked all my media. Took ages but at least they are all back online now. I do however wish I’d done that before reinstalling Vegas as now my NewBlue activations have maxed-out and I cannot find where they have hidden them in the computer or registry- thus am unable to re-apply my effects, of which were paramount to the projects. Have spent a couple of days trying to elevate this situation but to no avail. Looks like I’m gonna have to re-install windows just to clear the activation maxout. Nevermind. Forgot to mention- I never allow anything to play with the registry so the system care wouldn’t have effected it anyway.

You’ll be glad to hear, I’m staying well away from buses- not a fan of public transport anyway…!

Never install a codec pak. They will almost always mess up your video editing software.

Hey Guys,
This is my first time using a forum, I really hope you guys can help me out with my problem. So I have been using Sony Vegas Pro 9 for about 1 year now and have never really had any major problems like this before. So I got this screen recorder called Fraps. It is a very good screen recorder, one of the best I heard. So I got my footage using Fraps and what not. I edited it and rendered it like usual. Until…as it was rendering..out of no where it just stopped. It said this “An error has occurred while creating the media file —-.wmv. The reason for the error could not be determined” and so I don’t know what to do! I have tried restarting my computer, putting it in different rendering properties. I just don’t know what to do!!! I tried looking up video’s, but couldn’t find any of the issue I had 🙁
If someone could please help me, I would really appreciate it!

Hi Tyler, Welcome to the forum. You should really start a new thread for a new topic so that more people get to see it and so that it has a unique subject that people understand. I will hep you here in this thread since you appended to it.
I have not use FRAPS but many people come here with problems getting it to render. One solution that seems to work is to convert the FRAPS footage into a codec that Vegas can handle easier. Two codecs that work well are MJPEG and Huffyuv.
Use a free program like AviDemux 2.5 to convert the FRAPS videos to MJPEG AVI in another folder using the same filenames as the original. Then move all of the FRAPS video of their current folder and move the MJPEG video in (i.e., swapping the FRAPS files for MJPEG files) and start Vegas. It should pick up the MJPEG video and be able to render correctly.
Here are the settings to use in AviDemux: (Note the newer version of AviDemux will only say M-JPEG without the “lavc” at the end)
This should allow you to render properly. In the future, just convert your video first before editing.
