    Hello,

I will be editing a short for my film class this semester using Vegas Pro 8. I’ve never edited any in HD yet so please excuse my ignorance.

    My question is:
Can vegas video utlize HDV footage, either 1080i and/or 720p?
Do I need any 3rd party software to edit in HD?

Also, I heard about the Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0 for Windows,ProRes 422 Codec. What can anyone tell me about this?

Thank you for you time and help with this matter.

    Regards.

Vegas handles the HDV from my FX1 just fine. Edits the native format on the timeline without having to use intermediates or proxies, just slower. A dual core minimum would be nice.

    Terry,
Thanks for replying. I will not be using a Sony HD camera. Probably a JVC100 or Canon HD1.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Hello, I believe the Sony will be 1080i and the JVC will be 720p, Not sure about the Canon. No problems with Vegas though. I normally set my project settings to progressive as my Sony HVR-A1 is 1080i and fast moving subjects in interlaced video on an LCD screen looks terribe IMO. Plus if your going to chromakey, interlaced video is very dificult to do. One other thing. If your computer is not a newer dual core, you can convert the HDV files to Cineform AVI files. This codec has come with Sony Vegas since ver. 7 I believe. It’s a lossles format that can handle multiple renders, chromakeying better than the native m2t files HDV cameras output. Hope this helps.
