This is weird. I’ve been editing on Vegas 11 since 2011 and haven’t had this problem, even on multicamera projects with over a dozen tracks.

The footage is from my Canon Vixia HF S21, 1920×1080, 24 fps, AVCHD. I’ve got the project settings matching it and preview set to Preview Auto. Yet the playback is playing at 2 or 3 frames a second. I usually have Dynamic RAM Preview set to 100 MB. I tried changing it to 150 and 200, which worked for a minute or so, but then it goes back to a crawl again.

What could be causing this? My computer has been able to handle this with many tracks before, including with Vegas plugins.

If I stop Vegas for a minute or two, playback runs completely fine for another minute or two. Then it slows to a stutter.

I’m not sure what to do. I have a quad core 3.07 Ghz Intel i7, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, I’m editing footage on an external 1 TB hard drive with an esata cable that’s got plenty of space on it, and I’ve never really dealt with this before with Vegas 11.

Here’s a screencap of my tasks running, though I have Firefox closed while editing.

My render times are going way up as well.

One more thing. The audio for certain peaks like crashes and hits is much softer in the rendered video than when I’m previewing. I have the Track Compressor running to reduce the dynamic range, but this too has never been an issue before. Even using the volume envelope and adding the sound to additional audio tracks barely helps.

Have you made any changes to your system since you last used Vegas? Any new software downloads/installs/updates? Any hardware changes?
If you’re running Windows 7 (or even XP), try this:
In the Windows run box, type: msconfig
When the System Configuration window opens, click the ‘Start Up’ tab.
Uncheck EVERYTHING there except your Eset Antivirus software (excellent software choice, btw. One of the best on the market)
    Reboot your computer.

Now go back into Vegas and see if things are better.

I’ve thought about that, but I’m not sure what’s changed. Java’s tried to do a bunch of annoying updates, which I just ignore after a while. Adobe’s had at least one as well. Not really sure what else.

But I was editing videos on Monday and didn’t have this problem at all, even with multiple video tracks and effects.

I saw this problem with Vegas 11 as well. It appears to be fixed in Vegas 12, although I can’t say for certain as I’ve moved away from using Vegas due to instability issues over the previous two releases. But my quick test of this issue under 12 seemed to indicate that it was resolved.

Where you editing the exact same project on Monday with the same media in the same location? or were you editing a different project. If a different project, try and go back and open Monday’s project and see if it plays without issues. This will tell you if it’s the project or your computer in general. If the same project, try using System Restore to go back to Monday or restore from a daily incremental backup (you do backup your editing workstation daily don’t you? if not… you should!) 😉

BTW, I just had a similar experience where a piece of software was working a few days ago but not today. I restored from my backup and within an hour I was back in business. I use Acronis TrueImage to perform my daily incremental backups but if you are not backing up your system daily and you depend on it to make a living, you are playing with fire.

It was a different project, but all the video for my projects is stored on the same external hard drive, and backed up on another external hard drive.

I don’t use system restore regularly. I guess I’ve got to do it. I did it for a while, but stopped because I had to do regular changes to it, like clear out old restore points that were filling up my hard drive or something. Maybe I’ll try Acronis.

I would try opening the other project and see if it has the same problem. This will at least tell you if something chnaged on your PC or if it’s something about thew new project. Something as simple as hitting the oppacity slider on a track header can cause everything to slow down for a change that was unintended.
