Just finished 4 hrs of editing and experienced at least a dozen crashes. I can’t nail down what triggers the crash, sometimes when I trim events, sometimes when I drag clips on the timeline. Sometimes it will crash while just playing. Usually I get the “send info back to Sony window” other times the program window just disappears.

    Anyone else have this experience?

I’ve had this after returning to edit after having Lunch! Solution, don’t eat,,,,,

Seriously? You aren’t alone. Solution for me is to save every minute to ensure forced backups AND I’ve got Edward Troxel’s Auto Save running.

I really enjoy editing in Vegas. Let me say that again: I really enjoy editing in Vegas. It’s got everything I could want – mostly. This freezing/crashing is something the good guys at SCS know about and are working hard to cure and nail down.

Having used Vegas for 10 years now, VP11 is a real leap into the world of GPU and CUDA and 64 bit and OFX and so on. There is much now going on with Vegas, and all for the right reasons. However, there would appear to be a much greater level of bug chasing too.

As long as I can get through projects. Get them to clients. Keep to my main reason for expressing myself through Videography, Vegas will remain my means in doing that.

    Cheers

    Grazie

I was able to stabilize a previous release by first turning off the GPU acceleration in preferences/video. I found that my video card was too under powered even though it was on the approved nvidia list. I upgraded to a relatively cheap Nvidia workstation card with 2GB of memory ($75 at Tiger Direct) Everything has been good since then, even with the acceleration on again. Another thing you can do is always keep a laptop or other machine on a previous release for a while.

GPU acceleration was already disabled so that has to be ruled out.

I think I may have found the problem. My media was stored on a Samsung 1TB hard drive that I had mounted using a BYTECC USB3 external docking station. (looks like a small 2 slice toaster) When I removed the drive and placed it into a STATA tray the crashes ceased. Strange, the performance of the drive is about the same either way, and AJA System Test utility shows good performance using the USB 3 docking station. But the crashes have definitively ceased. So, live and learn.

Good tip. Thanks for posting your solution as it can aid others in finding their editing nirvana.

Like Graham, I love Vegas but hate the crashes.

I moved from Avid Liquid to Vegas back in the days of v8 because it was rock solid. Since v10, things have been going downhill for me.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

No solution, but just want to echo want has been said. I too love using Vegas, and have used it since discovering V8.

But, the current version 11(595) is the most unstable of any version of the software I have used, it is painful and frustrating to use. There is simply no pattern to the crashes, and with all drivers and OS bang up to date, I just assume there are some major bugs under the bonnet.

When it works, it’s fabulous, when it doesn’t, it’s a real pig. It seems to cope well with complicated effects, but fails on the real basics like trying a simple cut.

I will stick with it mind, and I`m sure they’re working hard on fixes…

Don’t mind me, I was just passing by on my was to ball up in the corner and cry for a while, when I saw these posts. After fighting (LITERALLY DOZENS of crashes) on Pro 11 all day yesterday just to get through a relatively simple edit, I wake up this morning to find that every transition has either black or the wrong video in the middle, and there are missing frames randomly throughout my video. Someone talk me down before I run out and buy a MAC!

Oh bloody hell Chuck, I do sympathise mate. For starters with a torrid day dealing with the constant crashes, then to find out your project file has corrupted. Not a good day.

It is widespread, and surely they must be able to find a fix or at least tell us something about it. Notice there are some 1/5 star reviews on Amazon detailing how bad it is. Funny, when you see the Facebook Sony feeds, they paint a lovely glowing picture.

Perhaps we should start a Facebook group with photos of our angry faces after witnessing the 20th crash of the day!!

Good luck, and I hear FCP is a fine program….got a few bugs I hear mind;))

I’m thinking of making a Sony Vegas “Crash Compilation” video (In Premiere of course!) and hopefully with some help from everyone, we can get it to go viral and maybe Sony will finally listen!

While crashes are a problem for me and my Vegas right now, I can’t say I’ve suffered the post-edit corruption you are experiencing. When I get it right on the timeline and save it, it is as good as gold.

What media are you editing… format, source and such?
