Vegas Pro 10c bug???
Posted by Ed Baldwin on April 14, 2011 at 6:16 pmIf I open Vegas Pro 10c (64x & 32x) without assigning/saving a veg file name , add media to the timeline, and render to a file of any file type ie avi, wav… the render will post the error message “An error occurred while creating the media file. The file name is invalid.”. If I name and save the project (veg file) it runs fine. Vegas 9 runs fine.

April 14, 2011 at 6:38 pmI can’t reproduce the problem. I regularly create small test projecst and never name or save them but I do render them and I don’t get that error. I’m using Windows 7 64-bit and Vegas Pro 10c 64-bit.

April 14, 2011 at 7:12 pmThanks jr for running the test.
I ran the original test on Win 7 64x SVC Pack 1 and then I installed Vegas 10c 64x on Vista 64x and in both cases I could reproduce the problem.

April 14, 2011 at 8:24 pmThat’s odd that you’re seeing it on two different systems. I know it works because I wish it didn’t. The other day I created a quick motion background for a DVD menu and rendered it out and never saved it. Now I want to make a change and I have to redo the whole thing again. I also tested before I posted to be double sure. I dropped a DV AVI file on the timeline and render an MPEG2 file without ever saving.
Where is the media that you are using? If it’s on an external drive and you are using it on both PC’s that could be the common thing.

April 14, 2011 at 8:37 pmjr, I have the essentially the same system as you 🙂 Triple boot OS drive, RAID for video, and a data drive. I have done some additional research and I am not alone with problem. Here is a work around on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsYcV42zGFw which is the same as what I did.

Ed, I figured it out and that video was very helpful because it gave me the clue. The bug is once you check [x] Save project as path reference in rendered media you will always get this error if your project doesn’t have a name. The fix is simple. Save the project, press render, uncheck this option and render. NOW, you can create a new project, don’t save it, and render all you want! You have to render with this unchecked at least once to clear the bug.
Just to be clear, the bug is that Vegas is ignoring the fact that “Save project as path reference in rendered media” is unchecked for projects without a name and it’s trying to save it anyway. You either need to leave it unchecked, or always name your projects until the bug is fixed.

That I understood whatI did not understand is how you were not seeing the bug. 🙂

April 14, 2011 at 9:21 pmJohn, I’ve had this on 32bit too. I’ve just lived with it and called it something else and it “works”. This too was with MOV files.

I didn’t see the bug because I never check “Save project as path reference in rendered media”. It only affects people who keep this checked. I don’t.
