I’m wanting to try something a bit ambitious as a video test, so I have a camrecorder (a Sony Handycam) and Vegas Pro 10.

I’d like to take a video and then edit it to make myself look ghostly and translucent, I guess this might involve taking the same video twice, one with me in the shot and one not and then doing something to make the entire shot with me translucent.. but I dunno, is this kind of thing possible without any other programs?

If it is, I’d also like to add some kind of ‘lag’ effect on when the ghostly version of me moves.

I think you would need to do this with a green screen. The background would then be shot independently.

You can do it without a green screen, but you will need to mount your camera solidly, as on a tripod, or very firmly on a table. Take one shot of the background, then, without moving the camera, take another shot with yourself in the picture.

In Vegas, put the clip with you in it onto Track 1, then put the clip of the background onto Track 2. Right click the Track Header to Track 1 and select Insert/Remove Envelope. Select Composite Level, and a blue line will appear at the top of Track 1. Moving this up and down will vary the “transparency” of the event, and can also be keyframed so you can fade in and out if you wish. Provided the camera was not moved or the settings altered between takes, the background should remain in perfect alignment, and the fading in and out should not be noticeable.

The lighting and shadows in both shots need to consistent too.

I agree with Roger’s idea of shooting it twice with a locked down camera. That should work out nicely.
