    So I’ve just started using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10 to do some video encodes for Youtube and when I try to change the maximum number of rendering threads in preferences it won’t go any higher than 4 even though I have 4 cores/4 threads for a max of 8 total threads (i7 920 HT enabled). Vegas itself even reads my system info correctly as having 8 threads, yet it won’t go any higher than 4, so my CPU usage during encoding stays at around 55-58% when ideally I’d like it to be closer to 98-100%. Also, the dynamic ram preview max is set at 350MB with a maximum of 1024MB available even though I have 6GB of ram installed. I’d certainly like to use more ram too, as barely any is being utilized during encoding.

    Does anyone know of a way to correct this issue?

    Not sure about the 4-thread limit, or whether “rendering” refers only to the composition of effects or the whole decode-composite-encode chain when rendering a project…

    As for memory, as far as I know Vegas Movie Studio is only available as a 32-bit app so it can’t use more than 4GB anyway. Rendering doesn’t necessarily need lots of RAM. 2GB is Sony’s recommendation for HD editing but of course more won’t hurt… I have 2GB on a dual-core system and on small HD projects VMS-HD 10 uses up to about 1GB with RAM preview set to 512MB.

    The “Dynamic RAM Preview” setting refers only to the max amount of memory allocated to temporarily storing rendered frames to speed up previewing when editing. This is why previews get smoother if you play the same section several times. You can also force rendering of a time selection (Shift+B) to allow a smooth preview.

    I believe the 4 threads is a limitation of Movie Studio. Vegas Pro will use all the threads you have available.

    I have Pro on a i7 860 and that setting won’t go higher than 4.

    That’s odd. I can’t test this because I only have a quad core but I thought people with dual quad cores like J Razz were seeing 8 threads. maybe it doesn’t count hyperthreading and only real cores?

    It’s strange. The 32-bit version won’t go higher than 4 but when I ran the 64-bit version it goes to 16.

    I have 8 cores so I’m not sure of why this is.

    It could be because the 32-bit version is limited to 2GB of memory and dividing the memory up across more than 4 threads may lead to worse performance because the threads don’t have enough memory to work as efficiently. The 64-bit version has unlimited memory per core which allows more cores to do work.
