I read that some of you running Windows 64 bit were allocating 2gb under preferences. My new machine is Tyan Thunder with 2 265 opterons (dual core) and 4gb ram. Vegas says that max ram is 1024 and will not accept more. The machine recognizes 4gb of ram on boot up. How can I allocate more ram?

Vegas will use as much RAM as it needs up to the limits imposed upon it by Windows. The memory setting for dynamic RAM pre-view is used for one specific feature of Vegas, namely dynamic RAM pre-view, not for Vegas as such. Do you have any particular reason for needing more than 1G of RAM for dynamic RAM pre-view?

Note that under windows, the maximum memory available to any one application is 2G.

Yes, I’m doing some transitions with HDV Cineform intermediates (1440 X 1080) and 1gb is too limiting to some of them. If I can allocate 2gb and still have 2gb, why not?

A 32 bit application in Windows can only allocate 2G of memory (Windows limitation). I assume the 1G max for pre-render comes from this. Since Vegas can never use more than 2G of RAM, setting aside some for it self, any codecs it will need to run etc, isn’t unreasonable.
