Hi I am editing a large project – 1 hour documentary. So far there is about 145 GB of files on a external ide hard drive (7200rpm) 300GB, which has a usb connection at present, waiting on PCMCIA card that has a sata 2 as the case & drive are sata 2 capable.
I have captured most of the files I need but will need to do a lot more editing with a lot of Picture in picture before the job is done. I have at present 11 lines of video & audio.
I am very concerned that my system is not powerful enough or that I do not have enough memory.

    My system:
Dell 9300 laptop 2 ghz centrino
    680 G Force 256mb memory on board
    1 gig of 533 DDR memory 2×512
7200 rpm system drive in laptop.
    XP new install
The computer seems to respond well especially after the fresh install. It is faster than a 3 gig Pentium 4 desktop (not dual core).
The main problem is that Vegas suddenly disappears, that is crashes leaving the desktop in front of me instead of Vegas.
I have extended the page file to 8 gigs. I do not know what else I could do.
There is 3 hours worth of files on the timeline at present. I am a little concerned that I may be asking too much.

    Any suggestions?

No error messages at all? Does it disappear every time you do “this”? (whatever “this” might happen to be). Any 3rd party effects installed and used in the project?

It is very rare for Vegas to behave in that way. Unfortunately, it could also be a hardware issue or an OS issue as well as the possibility it’s a Vegas issue.
