Vegas freezing on a new computer, what can be the problem?

In Vegas Pro 11 I have one project that freezes (gives error report message and switches off) when I try to add a new clip to it (already many clips are on timeline, maybe 150 or so). Computer is brand new i7 laptop, 1gb Nvidia Gt 540M graphics, 8 gb memory. Clips are SD quality, only two tracks I’m using, simple transition effects.
Another thing that project opens up really slow, like 2-3 minutes. I’m amazed, I specifically got a new laptop to have more speed, but this same project opens up with same speed on a Pentium 4! But this pentium is using all the resources on maximum, while my new one uses only like 10% processor and 50% of ram (with all windows services plus some small programs). Why is that? Why I cannot use more resources when they can be used?
