Vegas Freelance Editor
Posted by Rick Wise on October 25, 2008 at 5:03 pmIt’s rare, but once in a great while I find an ad for a Vegas editor in the San Francisco Bay Area. (Almost all ads are for Final Cut Pro editors.) There’s one posted right now, for Cupertino. Not exactly going-rate wages. In this region, editors pull in more like $40-75/hour. In the near future, I suspect, many of us will be forced to work for far less than we have been. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/tfr/892228675.html

October 25, 2008 at 7:47 pmIt looks like a job for a college student who, hopefully, knows Vegas! I can’t imagine any serious Vegas editor taking on such an assignment. Makes you wonder if the poster of this ad actually queried any professional editor regarding edit rates.

As are most of the so-called jobs posted on craigslist.
The ones I get a kick out of are “I/we are making a movie that’s guaranteed to hit the big time. With that in mind, we’re looking for a DP/lighting designer/sound man/grip/etc. Pay is low/none BUT you get your name in the credits of what’s sure to be the new Hollywood blockbuster”.
Yeah, right 🙁 -

October 26, 2008 at 5:20 amOut of curiosity, when someone posts a job for an editor, why are they so anal about which editing system the editor uses? Do you ask the carpenter what brand of hammer they use to build your house?

October 27, 2008 at 3:04 pmMaybe they want the editor to come to their studio and use the system they have? Or if editing is done off-site they want to ensure that they could get the footage and edit themselves should the editor they hire not work out to their satisfaction.
Think of it not so much as what hammer the carpenter uses for the house, but whether the blueprints and measurements are done in english or metric.

October 29, 2008 at 4:54 amI wouldn’t compare the NLE to the hammer. Any hammer will do. Do you really want to stop what your doing every 10 minutes to explain where a basic function is? Knowing FCP or Adobe is great, but it’s the details that make the difference.
So when is the Scarlett coming out again 2009, 2010, 2011…
