And where you get the notion that Vegas’s UI is 1999 old?
What then should it currently be, or look like?

[Don Cobble] “do you have a sense that Catalyst Edit is going to be the Vegas for MAC users and then eventually PC users”

Yes. While Sony is not abandoning their Vegas Pro users, they have said that the Catalyst Suite is the future and they they will be adding more and more modules to it. Vegas Pro is extremely deep and it will take a long time to replace it with equivalent functionality in Catalyst but I do see a time in the future where Catalyst Edit will be strong enough to get Vegas Pro editors to switch.

Sony is being very careful in moving to a new platform. They’re not forcing or abandoning anyone in the process. I applaud them for taking this giant step which will allow them to refresh their code base and take better advantage of technology like GPU acceleration from the start, rather than trying to graft it onto an old code base that was not designed for it (which we all see does not work). Adding Mac support positions them to compete with Adobe and Avid who already have a cross-platform solution.

Yes it is very different and no, I don’t know of any training although creating some might not be a bad idea. 😉

The one thing I don’t like about the interface is that it’s designed to be used on a Windows tablet so on a desktop it has big buttons and icons that are larger than needed for a mouse click. Other than that, it has a nice streamlined look. The nested timelines are a nice feature but right now training would be very brief as it doesn’t do much. There is a cut, and a dissolve, and a title. That’s it. No Video or Audio FX of any kind. So it shouldn’t be that difficult to figure out. lol

Sir John, I watched the youtube Gary Rebholz at the Sony NAB2015.
I think some things have even changed since his introduction my UI did not seem to match his, thus led to a little frustration. Also some codecs I use due to other programs, it does not recognize, Edius AVIs nor Cineform AVIs (unsupported)???? in catalyst prepare? and you can’t render out those Intermediaries AVIs??? Are they try to force the XAVC thing? Oh well I guess……

I will patiently wait for VASST lead trainer JR to dig in – create, and then serve his fellow man!
    Thank U

[Don Cobble] “Are they try to force the XAVC thing?”

Right now Sony is billing the Catalyst series as a set of tools for Sony 4K shooters so it makes sense that they are supporting their camera formats first and that the focus is on XAVC 4K formats. It actually solves the problem that most other NLE’s take time to support these new formats so Catalyst Prepare lets you use new Sony formats and convert them to ProRes 422 which is what most professionals and all post houses work with. I’m sure over time they may support other formats but the workflow that many choose to use (least on a Mac) is, “shoot with you new Sony 4K camera, convert to ProRes 422 with Catalyst Prepare, and edit with your favorite NLE. I realize that’s not a good workflow for Vegas Pro editors but Windows just doesn’t have a good digital intermediary since GoPro bought CineForm and cancelled their products.

I was using Catalyst Prepare to convert XDCAM to ProRes 422 for Final Cut Pro X until FCP X added XDCAM support.

Sir John, this is getting discouraging! My 2 Cents

    1) Vegas (as we know it) is on its way out, (Like trading in your favorite old car) usually its for the best, but hate to see it go.

    Alternative:
Adobe if you want them to be your life long parole officer, and they WILL! put the screws to their cash cows when they get them in to deep take an alternate way out. Then like fuel prices UP UP UP! at adobes wish! Adobe went to the Pharaoh model – Give them food in exchange for their land – delayed gratification, in the end HE owns you! like Google, they give great stuff free! well, not free, actually, in exchange for getting to harvest all your personal information. (the Gold of the future) Go Gmail!
(and I use CS6)[but liberty is still a value and a factor]

Avid – Possibly as long as they do not go the parole officer root. I was told that due to their retail business model the total parole officer root will not be possible? Hope so! Little pricy to get a full working system powerful enough to take advantage of its capabilities and training$$

Edius – Possibly if they get more third party options – also their software is odd/awkward – its growing on me – also little to no support base, unless you go in TV Station deep.

Final Cut X might be good I don’t know, but I would keep an eye whether it (X Program) is making the company money, they have already shown they will throw their customers on the railroad tracks to make their train ride smoother. I still have a MAC pro but have not pursued that root any further after climbing off the rails. Kinda leaves a bad taste.

Sony/Catalyst long road ahead – I have hopes for it! To soon to tell. Might get a New MAC if this Catalyst develops quickly.

So I am toying with Avid/Edius/Sony Catalyst – will stay with CS6& Vegas as long as they can do the deal then, I will trade them in for??????

I think reports of Vegas Pro’s demise are greatly exaggerated. I’m sure Sony is not going to abandon it, or it’s customers, any time soon. Once Catalyst becomes a viable alternative they may shut it down but until then, I wouldn’t really worry and if they do shut it down, I’m sure Catalyst will be the logical choice for existing Vegas Pro customers… at least that would be my strategy if I was VP of Development. lol 😀
