    Hello,

I’ve got a strange problem with the Vegas effect I can’t figure out. I have copied and pasted some paths from illustrator. I added the vegas effect to the layer with paths and of the two paths, one of them when selected in the effect seems to work ok. But the other path, which is seemingly the same as the first, just in a different position, won’t show the effect across the entire path. It’s like it just chooses a place in the middle of the path to stop the effect.

Has anyone else seen this before? It’s really annoying. I think it’s a bug, which isn’t so good, since I needed the effect for a project now. Is there any 3rd party apps or other ways you can think of that are quick/easy vegas replacements??

    Thanks for any insight.

Umm, sorry, going from memory here. I learned many years ago to only use one path at a time for Vegas. Keeps it simple.

Without seeing your artwork, I’d say that’s how Vegas works. It looks at “contours” starting from the upper left hand corner. It cannot differentiate between the two paths, it only sees the layer. If you select path instead of contour, you can only use one path.

Check the effects help notes very carefully for Vegas gotchas. The options are quite confusing for such a “simple” visual effect.

Too bad Brian Maffit’s original Atomic Energy site is no longer available.

Yeah, the Vegas effect allows you to choose Image contours as the method of application or Mask. When mask is chosen you can choose one mask per effect instance. It’s strange that one mask, which is a line with a simple curve works ok, and the other mask when chosen, which is a line of equal length with a curve in the opposite direction, does not get the effect across the full path. Just to a little between the midpoint and the end of the path.

It’s definitely not operating as it should. Probably a bug with a copy/paste of a mask path from Illustrator. I have no doubt that if I created mask paths (open ended masks) with the pen tool it would probably work ok.

I think I’m going to tweak the venetian blinds effect to create movement on the path. But I really liked the ability to create a light effect in addition to movement.

Hmmm.. maybe the blinds rotating plus a tint or moving 4 color gradient.. Oh well, more work but I can get the job done.. 🙂

Umm, okay, I couldn’t tell from your OP if you knew what you were talking about. Apparently you do, sorry. My mistake.

Well, At the very least I think I’m less dazed and confused than some others… 🙂

You could look at setting a new first vertex for the mask. Or reversing the direction, although I’m not sure if you can do that in AE I know you can in Illustrator.
