  • Vegas does not read my material.

Posted by Sami Huttunen on December 8, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I shot some material (with Sony EX-1) and imported the clips from the SxS cards through a card reader into a MAC and from there to my external hard-drive. Now for some reason I cannot drag & drop clips to the Vegas timeline with my PC here at home. The clips on my external hard-drive are .MOV and when I try open/convert them in VirtualDub I get an error message about a “xdv5” (????)

I can hear the sound if open a clip with quicktime but cannot see the picture. If i open it with Nero ShowTime it displays the picture but doesn’t play the sound.

What do I need to do so I can edit the material in Vegas?

    please someone help it’s urgent!

Sorry you’re not providing enough info.
Update Vegas to a version that supports the EX codec.
Get the BPAV folders and export to MXF for NLE.
Buy CalibratedSoftware to play/import EX .mov files on Windows.

I don’t know what the right answer is though because you haven’t provided the details.

    It’s an EX MOV file.

You should be given the BPAV folders. MOV files, although no loss from the source, are NOT MASTERS.

You have the RIGHT to get the MASTERS for any job you’re editing unless you specifically need to work from a previous cut.

You are now faced with the loss of Time and Expenses to fix this issue.

    Get the BPAV folders.
If they don’t have the BPAV folders, you must now BUY CalibratedSoftware plugin to use EX .mov files.
    I believe it’s this
    https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp
Download the trial (you’ll get a gray bar in the video) to see if it’ll work.
Bill the camera people for the expense. They did not do their job properly. There is NO REASON to import with Final Cut Pro except to Edit on Final Cut Pro. There is NO REASON for them to use XDCAM Transfer to re-wrap to .mov except to use in Final Cut Pro. They’re supposed to use ClipBrowser to back up the BPAV which are the camera masters. BTW FCP is perfectly CAPABLE OF EXPORTING EX MP4 if one needs to hand over an EX edit master if that’s known in advance.

Okay, now I’m really confused. Didn’t the OP shoot the original footage?

Sami, what version of Vegas are you using?
