Vegas crashing everywhere I turn
HI there!
I have been trying to fix an issue where vegas crashes now for a month or so. It is completly random when and how it crashes. The window dissaperas, it freezes or I just get an error message. It is completly hopeless to try and mess around with any setting, tried them all. The footage is recorded on a canon HD CMOS. It worked fine until a month ago or so. Any tips on how to sort this out?

Ole, like the crashes I’m experiencing, it is often hard to know what to say about ‘random’ crashes. I spent time recreating the exact workflow that caused the crash. I think that you should work on getting something reproduceable, or close to it, so we can better understand where to start. Vegas is a huge program, with a massive amount of variables, so eliminating any and all are great.
Something to think about. Did *anything* change on the machine around that time? Go back to Windows and see if you can find any “restore points” that may have been created by the OS while you loaded a new program, driver, whatever. It could be that you have started working with some new workflow, like I did, that created it. For example, as I tried working with multicamera workflows, I’ve experienced more crashes. I have my hunches why, but it’s too time consuming right now to try and sort it all out. I will do some experiments when I don’t have a million other things to deal with. One thought leads me towards trying the same problem with transcoded footage. Anyway, look at your workflow and see if anything shows up. Try and recreate the crash right after it happens. It could be different things crashing you, but they all look like just a crash.

Performance, perhaps not. But, fix your computer. I am not a gambling man but I’ll bet you a lunch (whenever we are in the same city) that you have some driver issues. Most likely the video drivers.

Yes, unfortunately Windows has an annoying feature called automatic updates which I believe is enabled by default, meaning that driver updates can happen silently. I had an issue with Nvidia chipset drivers a while back. I now manually review the updates and selectively install what I need. If stability issues arise, I at least have a starting point to work from.

Windows Automatic Updates will not update third-party device drivers.

Steve, I’m looking at my Windows Updates options (Hardware – optional) and I see updates for my webcam, RAID console and video card.
If I didn’t have my updates set to “I’ll choose what I want to install”, my guess is that these devices would get updated. -
We’re both right. (You more than me). I d1d some digging and found that manufacturers are encouraged to provide their drivers to Microsoft to be included in the automatic updates.
